Occupational Health and Safety Issues in Indian Agriculture

Abstract
Indian agriculture is transforming very fast with increasing level of farm mechanization. The contribution of mechanical and electrical power has increased up to more than 90 per cent by the introduction of new equipment and machines. More than 230 million agricultural workers use, operate and control the variety of tools and machines. The operation and maintenance of these machines requires training and skill. Therefore, the occupational health and safety of the operator is extremely important apart from higher efficiency and better performance of the equipment. The All India Coordinated Research Project on Ergonomics and Safety in Agriculture and Allied Sector is aimed for enhancing human comfort, minimizing accidents and improving occupational health and safety of workers through application of ergonomic principles. This paper highlights the status of occupational health and safety status and recommendation to minimise the accidents in Indian agriculture.
